Varda's Perspective on the Events Surrounding the Silmarils (Beren and Lúthien's Story) - 9/29 Homework
Some
may assume that I do not play a role in the events of Beren and Lúthien, but I
am involved regarding the Silmarils.
When Beren falls in love with Lúthien and Thingol tasks him with bringing
him a Silmaril, it seems like an impossible task, but he is determined to be
with Lúthien. Morgoth has possession of
the Silmarils, though he is burned by the jewels. In his crown, he is constantly tormented and
burned, never allowed to rest, because of my blessing that anyone who holds
them with evil intent shall be burned. Eventually,
Beren goes on a quest with Lúthien to steal one of the Silmarils and they are
successful. Beren is not burned by the Silmaril,
as he has proper intentions and that is what the fate of the Silmaril is. But, the fate of the other jewels is not to
go with Beren, breaking his knife when he tries to take the others. They flee, but Carcharoth stops them and Beren
attempts to fight him off with the Silmaril, but instead, Carcharoth bites off
Beren’s hand, swallowing the jewel.
Again, due to my blessing, he is burned from the inside by the Silmaril. Without the proper intentions and since it is
not the fate of the jewel, Carcharoth is burned and goes mad as a result, wreaking
havoc as he goes. Later on, after
Carcharoth’s death, the Silmaril is recovered and does not burn anymore.
The
Valar will not get involved at the moment with the Silmaril events, but this blessing
still has a great influence on what occurs around the jewels. As I see what is occurring, I do have fear
that the fate of the Silmarils is not ideal.
The purity of the jewels does still burn those with evil intentions, but
that does not mean people still try to hold onto them, withstanding the burning
and wearing from them. This is frightening
to me, because there is not more that can be done by me to protect the Silmarils. The blessing should provide protection
against the weaker forces of evil, and I am confident in its abilities with that,
but against stronger forces, such as Morgoth, the blessing may not be strong
enough. He is worn down and affected by
the Silmarils, but he seems able to withstand it more than others. I don’t know what more I can do for the Silmarils
and to protect them, other than hope that their fate brings them into the right
hands and that my blessing affects all of the wrong hands they may fall into.
