Character Bio - Varda
Blog Assignment - Character Bio - Varda 9/15/25
To the Elves I am known as Fanuilos, “Snow-white,” and “Ever-white.” In Sindarin, I am called Elbereth, “Star-Queen,” “Lady of the Stars,” Gilthoniel, and “Star-Kindler.” These names will all forever be repeated and honored in prayers, songs, hymns, but I am still most known to all as Varda, Queen of the Valar. As one of the Ainu and Aratar, I will bring hope to all during my own time and in years and years to come. The Elves know to always call to me and look to the stars when they are in times of darkness. The light of Eru Iluvatar has radiated from me, allowing light to be brought to those in need, including the Elves. When any of my names are uttered in any place, it does praise me, but also frightens off any evil creatures or spirits, aiding those in need. The stars of Middle Earth were created by me, from individual ones to constellations, lighting up the darkness that loomed overhead. It is my responsibility to fill light into the world when it is dull and in need of new brightness. The stars shine to bring not only light to Middle-Earth’s inhabitants, but hope as well, allowing them to know they can always turn to me when they are in times of need. Along with brightening the world for all to enjoy, I have also been able to establish the courses of the Moon and Sun, purposely placing them in the sky at opposite times, allowing light to be brought to the world, but the giving the stars their chance to shine too. When it was announced that the Children of Iluvatar would awaken, it was my responsibility to make new stars from the silver dews from the vats of Telperion, creating them to be brighter and a new sign to all that see it. I have also created a challenge for the enemy Melkor, who I have always seen the evil within his mind. The hope and brightness from the stars were a symbol of optimism and courage to all, along with creating a beautiful sight for all that saw it, but the challenge it posed to Melkor was most important.
I enjoy how this bio describes Varda, Queen of the Valar, as a creator of the stars and constellations of Middle-Earth. I didn’t realize before how big of a responsibility she has in providing light, especially to those who need it like the elves. Varda’s hope is then contrasted with the corruption and darkness that looms ahead. I thought it was a good point to specifically tie in Varda’s enemy Melkor as a part of the evil which her brightness goes against.
